why we say just Peace be upon him, if I translate it to Arabic, it'll be --Aleihi assalam---

that's what we always say

and i looked for this

i've found that the translation of

عليه الصلاة و السلام

is PBUH

written by letters

Abbreviation of : peace be upon him

and the one of

عليه السلام

was

peace be upon him

written by words!!!!
