In this work we conducted a physicochemical study that evaluates the impact of agricultural activities and urban domestic wastewater on the surface water quality of the Mexa dam in the area of El Tarf, which is located in the eastern Constantine coastal basin. 36 companions samples were conducted for three years (2010, 2011 and 2012), due to a single monthly sampling at the water level of the dam; a total of 36 samples were analyzed. The samples taken were subjected to an in situ measurement of the physicochemical variables (temperature, hydrogen potential, electric conductivity and dissolved oxygen) and laboratory analysis (Anions, Cations, biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, organic matter, phosphate, nitrate, nitrite and ammonium).
The ******* of the various organic and inorganic pollutants vary from one month to another and from one year to another. From a temporal point of view, contamination of the Mexa dam water varies according to climatic conditions, generally low during the winter period and higher during the low-flow periods. The results obtained reveal that the Mexa dam water is quite contaminated. It is certain that the dam is subject to a pollution of agricultural and urban origin.
