Looking into the life of Albert Camus is a real challenge. This “Frenchman from Algeria”, as he used to describe himself, remains unclassifiable.
A sun lover, born in poverty, he was a novelist, a playwright, a theatre director, an actor, an essayist and a journalist
.
He was no doubt an intellectual committed to fighting against all forms of totalitarianism.
He had a passion for the truth, in sharp contrast with the hypocritical blindness of some of his contemporaries.
History proved him right, whether in regard to Soviet camps or the Algerian problem. He boldly denounced extremism and nihilism,
but “never lost the sense of balance, whatever political storms surrounded him”.

He had a rich personality and a free mind.
Camus was a charmer and yet a touchy man, doubting and yet arrogant. He wanted to be loved and often managed to,
he wanted to be understood but was not always. He was too concerned about happiness to be really happy.
He was a solitary man. But he was deeply attached to his native land, Algeria.
He was born on 7 November 1913, in Mondovi (Dréan), near Bône (Annaba) in Algeria.
He was the second son of Lucien Camus, who worked in a wine-growing estate, and his mother, Catherine,
was of Spanish origin. His father died in 1914 in the battle of the Marne.
His widow moved to Algiers and had to work as a cleaning woman to provide for her sons.
