THE FIRST EXAM

Since the 1980’s, when China introduced a market economy and opend its doors to the west, foreign companies have been competing to get a share of this huge potential market of 1.2 billion people, *****alent to one fifth or the world’s population. In the early 80’s China imported a wide range of goods and set up joint venture projects to build western style hotels for the ever-increasing number of foreign visitors. Since the beginning of the 1990’s, China has followed a policy of reducing imports, improving infrastructure, and modernizing industry.
Every year China needs to construct hundreds of kilometers of roads and railways, build new power stations to supply energy and connect another ten million people to the telephone system, projects such as these offers huge investment opportunities for foreign companies interested in setting up joint ventures with China.
