![]() السلام عليكم Advantages of the Internet
The internet has opened up new avenues for communication. Email facility has allowed people to communicate with minimum wastage of time. It is now possible to send a message to any part of the world through a simple email address and the message is delivered in a matter of seconds. This has allowed businesses to expand and communicate with their vendors and customers located all over the world in record time. Personal communication has also become easier thanks to email. Chat rooms, video conferencing are some of the latest additions in this technology and these have allowed people to chat in real time irrespective of the ******** of the parties involved. The intranet allows for people within an organization to easily communicate and share information. The greatest advantage of this phenomenal creation is that it is easy to understand and simple to use. Information has been made available easily because of this wonderful technology. Search engines, websites dedicated to different subjects and large amount of articles and papers are available for perusal in a matter of few seconds. Forums on a number of sites allow people to discuss and share their thoughts and information with others located at different places all over the world. Whether this information is about the latest news happenings in the world or information about your favorite celebrity, everything is available at your fingertips. A huge cache of data is available on the internet on every single subject. With this storehouse of information people can not only increase their knowledge bank but can do so without wasting their time through traditional means such as visiting libraries and conducting exhaustive research. This is particularly relevant for students who can use this wealth of information for their school projects and also to learn new things about the subjects they are interested in. In fact this internet is a boon for many schools and universities that are now able to assign projects and work to the students and follow their progress which can be easily posted on the school/ university internal websites. Online education has grown at a very fast pace since internet allows the development and use of innovative tools for imparting education. The internet has also revolutionized the entertainment industry. You no longer need to go to a cinema hall to watch your favorite movie. You now have companies offering their services wherein you can just download or order your favorite movie and watch it with a fast internet connection. Likewise you can download your favorite music or other important software in a matter of few minutes. There are a number of shareware programs that allow you to share and download your favorite music and videos. The internet also allows people from different cultures and backgrounds to connect with each other. Internet gaming is a huge business and allows enthusiastic gamers to compete against each other in games even when they are located far apart. Likewise dating has also allowed people to find their prospective soul mates. Shopping has also got a complete makeover thanks to the contribution of the internet. You have many websites selling a variety of products of products online and one just needs to select or bid for the desired product and entire financial transactions can be conducted through the internet. E commerce has got a facelift because of the internet and entire global business deals can be conducted over the internet. Transfer of money is also no longer a time consuming job and with just a click of a button you can easily transfer funds to anyplace you wish. Some of these services of course come at a price. A variety of other services are also available through the internet including booking of tickets whether they are for traveling, hotel reservations or for your favorite movies. Medical support and guidance is also available through the internet and there are many websites catering to this and a horde of other services. Disadvantages of the Internet While the internet has made life easier for people in many ways it is also reflecting an uglier side to its existence through a number of problems that it has thrown up for its users. With a large amount of information freely available on the internet theft and misuse of this information is a likely possibility. Time and again you see cases of people using someone else’s information and research and passing it off as their own. Another problem or disadvantage of the internet is that it has allowed a great deal of anonymity to a large number of people who may access the different websites, forums and chat rooms available. This has allowed perverted individuals to at times take advantage of innocent people and abuse their trust. Since business dealings and financial transactions have become easier because of the internet another problem that has arisen is that people can now misuse your private information including financial details such as the credit card number. There have been cases of financial frauds and other problems that people have experienced following misuse of such sensitive information. Some unscrupulous individuals have been successful in creating viruses and links that once clicked can automatically transmit your personal email addresses and other details to certain parties and even your bank account details in some extreme cases. The case where funds are withdrawn or where sensitive data are obtained is called phishing. One of the biggest problems that the internet has created is that of spamming. Spamming refers to the activity wherein unwanted emails and other links are sent in bulk to people. These emails may pertain to advertising or random bulk emails and these may contain viruses that may corrupt the system and even if they don’t cause any harm these can be plain annoying. The internet has also given birth to viruses that can wreck havoc in the system and cause a lot of damage. Many websites are notorious for sending adware, viruses and also other malicious software that can slow the computer and in some cases even harm it considerably. The internet is particularly attractive for a child since it has so much to offer in terms of entertainment. However pornography is a serious threat in today’s world and this can cause a lot of problems in terms of emotional and mental well being of the child. There are practically millions of pornographic sites and without supervision a child can easily fall into the trap of accessing such sites. Even though a number of informative sites are available there is also a darker side to the internet with the availability of a large number of other problematic sites that can cause serious effects on a child during these impressionable ages. Even though the internet has in many ways brought the world closer together it has in many other ways caused a lot of damage to relationships and growth of individuals. This is because the internet can have a huge addictive pull and people are at times known to surf the internet for up to 15 or 16 hours a day. Chat rooms and forums or other ways of interactivity cannot really replace real life socializing and if that takes place internet can be quite detrimental |

This section takes a look at the issues of computer addiction, problems with e-mail, Internet friendships, and Internet regulatio 1) Just Send Me a Postcard Bernard Bonnet from France Although e-mail is a wonderful way to communicate, it is very dangerous because it is going to alter relationships. Since I have a computer (I got it when I moved to the U.S.), I have more and more difficulties to "hand-write". I send e-mails to my friends who have computers—but in France it's not so common—and as for the others, I am waiting for them to call me! I understood this evolution (the beginning of an addiction?) when my best friend in Paris, while I was proposing to send an e-mail, said to me, "I don't want an e-mail. I want a real, colourful postcard, written with your thick black pen and your signature even if it takes 8 days to receive it." 2) Trashy E-mail is a Serious Problem María Eugenia Treu from Brazil If you work in front of a computer, you are aware of how many trashy e-mails you can receive in a day. Some people who have nothing else to do fill their empty days sending dirty images and disgusting scenes to other people by e-mail. I think that these trashy e-mails should have some kind of regulation, but not in the same way as the other media. There should be some kind of filter of what you can or cannot receive. This trashy e-mail could even bring a serious virus to your computer. Also, you would be very upset if these disgusting scenes arrived for your 8-year-old son, for example. If there is something to filter it, it would be a good thing to have installed on your computer. Despite the prevalence of objectionable material on the Internet, this media form remains less regulated than TV and movies. Hyeja Lee from Korea, Ji-Soo Shin from Korea, and Paola Monsalve from Mexico write about this issue. 1) Personal Information is Unsafe on the Internet Hyeja Lee from Korea The Internet must be the most complicated media because the inside of it is like mazes. Once I connect with the Internet, I can surf anywhere. I can shop, listen to music, watch movies, and check my bank account on the Internet. Sometimes I have to type my address, telephone number, job, e-mail, and credit card number. I always hesitate to give this information when I have to do it. I think we are always required to give too much personal information on the Internet, and sometimes I receive email, but don't know from whom. Our private information may no longer be private. Sometimes I hear about *******. For example, I heard about a large telephone company that exposed its customers' information. The reason this happens is it's too difficult to make information secure on the Internet. Only five years have passed since the Internet was popularized, and it has been improving very quickly. I guess there are many criminals who are hiding on the Internet like they hide in a maze. With the Internet's quick evolution, we need more security and laws to prevent our private information from being exposed. 2) Some Sites are Harmful for Children Ji-Soo Shin from Korea We can use computers to find lots of information on-line. The Internet is a very useful system. For example, even though I'm in my hometown, I can easily get information about another part of the world like the government system of Texas. However, it has some negative aspects. Let's imagine that your child is good at using computers. He can also use the Internet to go anywhere even if that site is for adults. There are many adult sites about sex and violence. If your child desires to see them, he or she can find them easily. They aren't blocked, and this can be very harmful for your child. If young people are exposed to too much sex and violence, we should regulate this media. However, it is very difficult to solve this problem. We can't say it's the parents' responsibility because the Internet is new technology to them. Instead, it should first be restricted or regulated by the government. Then parents should try to learn about this system. This problem can be solved gradually. We have to consolidate our power and try to solve it together. Sometimes lots of information give us some benefits, but sometimes it can destroy it. 3) Internet Sites Should Be Rated Paola Monsalve from Mexico Nowadays, more and more people are likely to use the Internet. The problem is that children spend hours surfing the Net, sometimes searching for important things; but most of the time they just use it for entertainment. There they can find all kinds of sites that may include nudity, bad ********, or violence—******* that parents find objectionable and don't want their children to see. TV programs and movies are regulated, but the Internet isn't. I think it should also be regulated so that parents can control what their kids look for on the Internet. Otherwise, the restrictions placed on TV and movies would be useless. Children could watch on the Internet the same kind of things they are forbidden to see on TV and in the movies. The Internet should be regulated as are other forms of the mass media; each web page should be rated just as TV programs are rated. V-chips could even be installed on the Internet to block the pages that parents find inappropriate for their children. 4) It's Hard to Drag Ourselves Away from Computers Sylvia Bopp from Switzerland In the last few years the Internet has become a widespread phenomenon around the world. People have started to use the computer like they used to watch TV. It is, in fact, very comfortable just to sit down and have a chat with somebody from South Africa about fishing and get some important advice. Whenever we get hungry, we simply order a pizza through the Internet. While we are waiting for the food, we send an important e-mail to a business concerning some stock sales for tomorrow. To make a long story short, we just don't have much time for communication with people anymore. Besides, there is so much information available that when we once start surfing the Internet, we are hardly able to drag ourselves away from the computer. There are a lot of people who are addicted to TV and watch it 5 to 7 hours a day, and I believe using the computer is becoming an addiction, too. 5) It Could Happen to You María Eugenia Treu from Brazil Addiction to the Internet is becoming a very serious issue. If I had heard about this a few years ago, I would probably have found it hard to believe, but today it is something that is increasingly true. You might think that these kinds of things could never happen to you, but it is really not true. Sometimes when you are depressed and feeling lonely, if you go to the Internet, it can provide such good entertainment that you can get used to it. Then, the next step could be addiction. The most important thing is to make sure that you are not spending too much time in front of the screen. Although it seems to be easy to drag yourself away from the Web, it is simply not so. You have to make an effort to put some limits that you can not trespass. 6) Addiction to Chat Rooms Nicole Meier from Switzerland It always starts harmless. A friend tells you about these new uncharted territories—the chatrooms. Why should I chat? Usually you have some free time left and you are curious and want to be up-to-date. Sometimes you meet your friends in the chatroom instead of giving them a call. Later, you get more interested in other anonymous chatterers and find a common ground. Most times you chitchat with each other, sometimes you write with fantasy and give an impression to them. After seeing for a while the same nickname of a chatterer, you want to know more about them. You want to meet them each day, each hour, each minute so you won't miss any small talk or laughter. It starts to be harmful when you prefer to stay on while your friends go out for dinner and have fun. Maybe you won't have time to prepare a meal for yourself and eat only fast food. If you stay online all night long, you won’t get enough sleep. Finally, you can say that you are addicted to chatrooms. This will be a serious problem in our society in the future. 7) It's All-Consuming for Children Paola Monsalve from Mexico Have you seen cartoons where children are turning into real addicts to electronic stuff? Unfortunately, this is happening in real life; more and more children are becoming addicted to computers, television, and video games. These things are all-consuming for them; they are hooked on them. Only if they are in front of a screen do they feel fulfilled. Clearly, this is a serious problem, and as long as parents don't do anything to stop it, children won't have the willpower to drag themselves away from these things. More and more people are spending time on the Internet, and many are striking up friendships in chatrooms. Some feel this is a wonderful way to develop new relationships; others warn it may be risky. Paola Monsalve from Mexico, Bernard Bonnet from France, Anotai Udomwittayakrai from Thailand, Yi Xie (Amy) from China, and Tatiana Anop from Belarus comment on this issue. 1) Internet Friendships Can Be Dangerous Paola Montsalve from Mexico But, people have to be wary of the problems or consequences it can cause. Striking up Internet friendships can sometimes be dangerous. You may find friends there, but what kind of friends could they be if you don't even know them? It can sometimes be dangerous. You may get so involved with some friends in the chat room that it can cause you to do crazy things. There was a case of two teenagers who struck up a friendship in a chat room and drove miles away from their homes to meet each other. Fortunately, nothing bad happened, but this could have ended in a tragedy. So we shouldn't abuse the use of the Internet. I suggest that you have friends from school or other places rather than virtual friends through a computer. 2) Why Not Enjoy Internet Friendships? Bernard Bonnet from France Friendship is a very positive relationship between two or more persons. It starts in the neighbourhood at school during leisure or professional activities. People need to confide in someone, to trust somebody else. Nowadays, there are computers and the Internet. It would be sterile to ignore this wonderful instrument. The neighbourhood becomes the world, and I can organize my birthday party in my private chat room with my friends from San Diego, Paris, Taipei, Berlin and Maurice Island. Isn't it wonderful? I cannot see the danger if the relationship is just friendly. Well-balanced people can surf and chitchat or choose a thematic room and stay in this room without problems. Sure, there is a temptation to play and transform the reality, even indeed the identity, but it could also be a magic place to express a lot of wonderful things. 3) Virtual Friends are Not Real Friends Anotai Udomwittayakrai from Thailand I don't think that virtual friends can be real. Sometimes they might be our friends when we feel upset and nobody close to us consoles us. A virtual friend might help us forget sadness, but we should think carefully that maybe the people whom we talk with on computers are pretending when they contact us. They might be lying about everything they tell us even though we are talking about real things. We actually don't know people whom we have never met. That's why we call them "virtual" friends. They can't be real. 4) You Don't Really Know Virtual Friends Yi Xie from China I don't think virtual friends can be real because, first of all, you don't really know who they are. You just talk to them on-line, and it isn't face to face. Second, this world is a complex world. Lots of people lie. Maybe they just say something they think you want to hear, and you feel they understand you, you feel they are friendly to you, but maybe they only use you to fill their extra time or times when they are bored. Sometimes, when you tell them your story or secrets, you think they are your friends, but maybe they don't think so, maybe they are just laughing at your story or secrets behind your back. You can't know if they are real friends. Be careful! 5) Virtual Friends are Not For Me Chen Chih Lin from Taiwan A virtual friend might be a good friend for others, but not for me. When I connect with a virtual friend who expresses his or her idea, I don't know if the idea is real or not. So, in my opinion, a virtual friend is just for fun. Maybe you can make some new friends through the Internet, computer chat rooms, and e-mail. I think the advantage is that you can express something weighing on your mine, no matter what it is, to let out your emotions and not have to care about who the person is. However, the disadvantage is when you tell something to a virtual friend and want them to help you to solve a problem; they may not be serious or care about you. It might also be risky because the person whom you chat with might not be a good person, so be careful while you are chatting with a stranger. 6) Advantages and Disadvantages of Virtual Friends Tatiana Anop from Belarus Advantages of virtual friends If you are a shy person and usually have difficulties getting along with other people, it can be easier to communicate with virtual persons because you don't need to see them personally. You can find someone who has the same hobbies and interests in life. You may become more self-confident.You might learn a lot from other people using the Internet. Disadvantages of virtual friends Virtual friends are very different from real ones. They can't help you if something happens in your real life. You cannot be as close to each other as to your real friends. When you meet someone everyday, you begin to know this person better, so you find more things to do together. You might have tons of virtual friends, and you can lose them. You will not be upset about it, however, because sometimes you don't even know their real names. On the other hand, if you lose even one of your real friends, you will be sorry about it for the rest of your life because real friends usually come through life with you. |
