The Ego and the Other in the Mediterranean Thinking
9-10 December 2014
The research laboratory “The dialogue of Religions and Civilisations of the Mediterranean Basin” in Abu Bakr Belkaid University of Tlemcen, Algeria will host an international colloquium about “The Ego and the Other in the Mediterranean Thinking” on9-10 December 2014.
Mediterranean countries (societies and communities) are facing lots of challenges in terms of thinking while they are witnessing several economic problems. Among these challenges are conflicts in terms of methodologies and concepts that are so harsh to be semantically grasped. Indeed, aiming at investigating in the practical exploitation of those features does require a strong consideration of one’s civilization’s standards and symbols.
It is worth noting that innovation, in its true meaning, does not encourage imitation and does not necessarily entail a hack from one’s roots as the latter is regarded as the basis of the values which are derived from our own identity and culture.
In the current times characterized by conflicting ideologies and differing interests, and with the advancement of globalization as well, the Mediterranean communities and peoples are compelled to frame their own identity and consolidate their relationship with their environment. In this respect, it is difficult to ignore the conflicting relationship between “the ego” and “the other” as one cannot survive without the existence of the other and only prospers though the recognition and the awareness of one another. Indeed, both units seem to be strongly connected and disconnected at the same time. Undeniably:
“The ego” refers to the set of principles inspired from the social values of our civilization including its religious texts and its rich cultural heritage centuries ago up to the present. Whereas, “the other” stands for the set of the principles and values within foreign civilizations, and most of the time it is used to refer to the sum of the West’s experiences, and also its achievements and acquisitions centuries back up to the present.

The problematic:
The conference proposes to explore the following questions:
-To which extent do the spread of information, communication and global media have an impact on our Mediterranean communities?
-Can the approach of refinement and production be successful in fulfilling equal and effective acculturation for both sides?
-How could it be possible to originate concepts such as “globalization”, “identity”, “free economy”, and “the relationship with the other” without any dependency or stagnation?
-What ways would lead to the promotion of the cultural institution away from political-religious institution?
-How could it be possible to generate an objective dialogue and partnership between “the ego” and “the other” able to guarantee for both sides a degree of fair relationship characterized by respect and fairness in different cultural fields, planning, and behaviour?
-Are we able to provide the basis for a globalization oriented towards diversity and pluralism?
-Can we talk about a Mediterranean identity which groups together all the peoples of the Mediterranean basin and its surroundings under one unit distinguished by its own local peculiarities and intellectual tenets?
-Can the association with “the other” occur only with the recognition of the dichotomy of winner and defeated?
-Could the Arabic critics and Arabic linguistic research release themselves from the cultural specificity and the intellectual tenets of the Western models?
-How could the interaction between “the ego” and “the other” be promoted through translation?
Possible topics may include, but are not limited to:
-“The ego and “the other”: etymology, concept, the term.
-Psychological and social dimensions to the problematic of “the ego” and “the other”.
-The extent of dialogue among the Mediterranean civilizations and communities and foreign civilizations.
-“The ego” and “the other” through Mediterranean and foreign literatures.
-Translation as one of the different aspects of interaction between “the ego” and “the other”.
-“The ego” and “the other” in the digital space.
