9 Easy Ways to Impress Employers

There's only one way to get an employer's attention — with quality. Make sure that your profile stands out from your competition by starting with some key advice from the oDesk blog: We recently ran a pair of profile-focused posts that should be must-reads for any serious contractor, experienced or new.
The first post, "
Five Ways to Improve Your Profile," offers sharp advice from a real oDesk employer, including:
- Think of yourself as a product: "Think of your picture and profile as the packaging, your description as the package design (or the copy that gets the potential customer excited about the product), and your skills and knowledge as the features and capabilities of the product."
The second piece, "
Four Ways to Create a More Successful Portfolio," helps you showcase your work in a way that will make employers eager to reach out to you. Tips include:
- Have a portfolio piece for each service you provide. Load at least two or three portfolio pieces for each skill you list on your profile, and make sure the pieces are labeled in a way to indicate those skills.
- Write a well-written description for each portfolio piece. It's not enough to load up the thumbnail — it's just a thumbnail. Provide a description that is concise, compelling and complete, so the employer knows what she's looking at.
Oh — and the profile is not your only chance to make a good impression. When you're applying, you also have to write the perfect cover letter. Fortunately, we've got
advice on that, too.
Success Stories
Sara Haley has been an oDesk contractor for more than three years, and she has learned a thing or two about getting work in our marketplace. In fact, she's written ebooks about it. (Learn more from
her guest blog post about getting early feedback.) We asked her advice for contractors looking to improve their profiles, and the writer/desktop publisher/transcriptionist/graphic designer had plenty.
"I think a concise, well-written profile is critical," the Nebraska-based contractor says. "Be serious about it without being boring, and make sure it sells you abilities."
She's also a huge fan of oDesk's free skills tests (especially for new contractors). She has taken 24 of them, and scored in the top 10 percent in 16. "Take every test that is remotely connected to what you do or what your interests are," she says. "You never know what an employer might be seeking."
"Most important, probably, is getting out there, getting work and employer feedback. In the beginning, that means working for a little less than you think you are worth, just to get the early jobs and feedback. I started at $6 an hour."
Lastly, she says to put in the time to establish yourself. "Make looking for jobs on oDesk part of you daily routine — and don't be discouraged about not finding work immediately," she says. "It will come soon enough and after a while, you'll start getting invitations to apply for jobs."
oDesk — Live

On Sept. 6, oDesk CEO Gary Swart will be cohosting an event on IBF Live. The webcast is the Intranet Benchmarking Forum's live, interactive, online video broadcast showcasing the latest happenings in intranets and the digital workplace. Head over to
their site to subscribe or sign up for a free trial before the show, where Gary will be talking with guests from CA Technologies and video game powerhouse Electronic Arts.
