This is a family tree. It shows the relationship between people in one family.

Elizabeth --+--Bill

Elizabeth and Bill are married.
Elizabeth is Bill's wife.
Bill is Elizabeth's husband.
Elizabeth and Bill have three children, a daughter called Judy and two sons called George and Peter.
Elizabeth is Judy and George's mother.
Bill is Judy and George's father.
Judy is Elizabeth and Bill's daughter.
George is Elizabeth and Bill's son.
2. Grandparents and grandchildren

Ann Ben
George married Susan.
George and Susan have two children, a daughter called Ann and a son called Ben.
Elizabeth is Ann's grandmother.
Bill is Ann's grandfather.
Ann is Elizabeth and Bill's granddaughter.
Ben is Elizabeth and Bill's grandson.
3. Other relatives
Look again at the diagram above.
In-laws
Susan is Elizabeth and Bill's daughter-in-law.
Elizabeth is Susan's mother-in-law.
Bill is Susan's father-in-law.
Susan is Judy and Peter's sister-in-law.
Peter is Susan's brother-in law.
Aunt, uncle, nephew and niece
Judy is Ann and Ben's aunt (or aunty).
Peter is Ann and Ben's uncle.
Ann is Peter and Judy's niece.
Ben is Peter and Judy's nephew.
4. Relationships
Here are some more words for different types of relationships:
Informal words for mother and father are mum and dad.
Together our mother and father are our parents.
Informal words for grandma and grandpa are gran and grampy.
When a marriage finishes it is called a divorce.
After a divorce we say ex-husband or ex-wife.
Our in-laws, for example mother-in-law, sister-in-law or father-in-law are our wife's or husband's relatives.
A partner is someone we live with but are not married to.
If you are going out with someone, you have a romance with them but do not live with them.[/align]
