in direct speech "may" becomes in report speech "maight"
?????but "might" in direct speech how to become

in D speech "could" in R speech "had been able"
so I said that maybe ther is a synonyme to "maight"

present perfect will be past perfect

look dear u did a mistake
past perfect = aux had+ verb in the p ast participle
might also is an auxiliary.SO if we write had might ........ it means our rule becomes
aux had + aux without a verb...this rule doesn't exist in english and this is ur fault
so becareful

For ur question
when u have an auxiliary in ur verb ..it 's the auxiliary that changes not the verb
when ur aux is in the past no change occurs to it
may write..... might write

might write .....might write

the same for could would should might ought to

IN FACT could is a special case because
can = is able to
could = was able to
was able to ..........had been able
******is here is a verb not an aux ****
that's why ur teacher told u it changes
but even if u leave as it is ..i mean could ..it 's correct

we can't say had might ???
