What is the etymology of hello?

Hello is an alteration of hallo (which previously was holla or hollo) - a shout to call attention. Hello dates to 1883 and has become the most frequently used greeting, especially on a telephone. Legend has it that Thomas Edison was the first to say hello on the telephone. However, the first telephone exchange, which was set up in New Haven, Connecticut in 1878, answered the phones with "Ahoy, ahoy!" The word hello is also used to express surprise and it can be used as a verb, with the inflected forms being helloed, helloing, helloes.

Etymology

According to the Oxford English Dictionary (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxford_English_Dictionary), hello is an alteration of hallo, hollo,[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hello#cite_note-2) which came from Old High German (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_High_German) "halâ, holâ, emphatic imperative of halôn, holôn to fetch, used especially in hailing a ferryman."[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hello#cite_note-3) It also connects the development of hello to the influence of an earlier form, holla, whose origin is in the French holà (roughly, 'whoa there!', from French là 'there').[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hello#cite_note-4) As in addition to hello, hallo and hollo, hullo and (rarely) hillo also exist as variants or related words, the word can be spelt using any of all five vowels.
Telephone

The use of hello as a telephone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone) greeting has been credited to Thomas Edison (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Edison); according to one source, he expressed his surprise with a misheard Hullo.[6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hello#cite_note-5) Alexander Graham Bell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Graham_Bell) initially used Ahoy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahoy) (as used on ships) as a telephone greeting.[7] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hello#cite_note-6)[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hello#cite_note-etymology-7) However, in 1877, Edison wrote to T.B.A. David, the president of the Central District and Printing Telegraph Company of Pittsburgh (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittsburgh,_Pennsylvania):
Friend David, I do not think we shall need a call bell as Hello! can be heard 10 to 20 feet away. What you think? Edison - P.S. first cost of sender & receiver to manufacture is only $7.00.[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)]
By 1889, central telephone exchange operators were known as 'hello-girls' due to the association between the greeting and the telephone.[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hello#cite_note-etymology-7)
