This is the 'Ramadan's History' subject; so it basically means I will list you the importan historic events that took place during the 30 days of Ramadan, in the past; distant and near

Notice the following: AH means After Hijra, which is the Hijri calender, while AD is the georgian calender; AD means Anno Domini, which translates to 'In the year of the lord' in medieval latin

1st of Ramadan


a) 2 AH (624 AD): is the first Ramadan Muslims fast; it's said that fasting was enforced a month earlier in Shaban


b) 114 AH (732 AD): Battle of Tours in the reign of Ummayad caliph Hisham bin Abdul Malik between Abdul Rahman Al Ghafigi Charles Martel. Muslims' defeat in this battle resulted in their loss of final attempt to inject Islam in the western world, and it was named Balat Al Shuhada because of its massive Muslim casualties

c) 1286 AH (1869 AD): Shakaib Arsalan was born. He was a major icon in advocating Arabic nationalism and was a strong opponent of occupation. He was the first to call for the establishment of the Arab League, an organization of the 22 Arabic states that was established 77 years later on 1946 AD. He also advocated the proposition that the survival of the Ottoman Empire was the only guarantee against the division of the ummah and its occupation by the European imperial powers



2nd of Ramadan


AH 82 (624 AD): Muslim general Al Hassan ibn Al Numan conquers the whole of the Moroccan lands against the Berbers


AH 132 (750 AD): Abdulla Abu Al Abbas seizes Damascus, in turn establishing the Abbasid caliphate over the Umayyad caliphate


AH 732 (1332 AD): Ibn Khaldoun is born. He was a famous historian, scholar, theologian, and statesman born in North Africa in present-day Tunisia. He is considered the forerunner of several social scientific disciplines: demography, cultural history, historiography, the philosophy of history, sociology, and modern economics. He is sometimes considered to be a "father" of these disciplines, or even the social sciences in general, for anticipating many elements of these disciplines centuries before they were founded. He is best known for his Muqaddimah (known as Prolegomenon in Greek), the first volume of his book on universal history, Kitab al-Ibar



3rd of Ramadan



AH 65 (685 AD): Marwan ibn Al Hakam, founder of the second Umayyad dynasty dies. Marwan's short reign was marked by a civil war among the Umayyads as well as a war against Abdullah ibn Zubayr who continued to rule over the Hejaz, Iraq, Egypt and parts of Syria. Marwan was able to win the Umayyad civil war, the result of which was a new Marwanid line of Umayyad caliphs. He was also able to recapture Egypt and Syria from Abdullah, but was not able to completely defeat him


AH 1307 (1890 AD): The Muslim general Rabih az-Zubayr dies. Az-Zubayr established an Islamic kingdom in Chad, but was later taken over by the invading French army


AH 1362 (1943 AD): Italy surrenders to the Allied forces in World War2. Italy became involved in the war after its alliance with Germany in 1940, however after its successive defeats a surrender to the British and American forces was inevitable




4th of Ramadan



1073 AH 1073 (N/A): The Ottoman empire declares war on Germany 56 years after the Sitfaturk treaty that brought a halt to the previous war between the two states; which was sparked due to the Germans building a fortified tower near its border with the Ottoman empire

AD 1032: People of Cordoba convened to elect their leader after they've eliminated their previous Barber leader Al Qassim bin Hammod. The Umayyad Abdul Rahman bin Hisham was elected their caliph after three weeks of none-leadership status


AH 927 (1521 AD): Suleiman the Magnificent conquers Belgrade, a key to central Europe and home to the strongest towers near the Ottoman Empire. Ottomans besieged this city three times in the past, in 1441, 1456 and 1492, but were only able to seize it in Suleiman's reign

AH 666 (1268 AD): The Mamluk general Baibars conquers Antioch after repelling the Crusaders. This historic victory caused ripples that toppled the Crusader states one by one


AH 1367 (1948 AD): A Zionist commando unit led by Moshe Dayan massacres 426 Palestinians in the city of Lud


AH 1409 (1989 AD): A border crisis between Senegal and Mauritania breaks out; the crisis is attributable to farming interference between the two countries

AH 223 (838 AD): The Abbasid caliph Al-Mu'tasim captures Amorium, after a Muslim woman abused by some Romans called 'Wa Mu'tasima', to which Al-Mu'tasim responded, "Wabayki Ya Ukhtah". The poet Abu Tamam recorded this incident in a wonderful poem


AH 1208 (1794 AD): American President George Washington obtains increased jurisdictions to pour 688,000 $ in order to built a fortified ship that can withstand attacks from the Turk pirates in the Mediterranean Sea


AH 1300 (1882 AD): The Ottoman prime minister Mahommd Nadeem Pasha orders '6th of Ramadan Decisions', which reduced the empire's foreign debts to half; a decision which angered both France and England

AH 89 (N/A): Mohammed ibn al-Qassim al-Thaqafi invades Sindh, armed with numerous catapults


AH 361 (971 AD): Al-Azhar University opens in the reign of the Fatimid caliphate and remains up until now biggest center in the world for Islamic civilization radiance. The university's mission includes the propagation of Islamic religion and culture. To this end, its Islamic scholars (ulemas) render edicts (fatwas) on disputes submitted to them from all over the Islamic world regarding proper conduct for Muslim individuals or societies


AH 1300 (1882 AD): The naval Ottoman general Taghar Bek seizes control of Sicily after he extricated 7,000 captive Muslims. He then transferred the island to France, which couldn't hold it for long as Spain seized it in the same year

AH 83 (702): Jafar Al-Sadig is born. He was a polymath: an astronomer, alchemist, Imam, Islamic scholar, Islamic theologian, writer, philosopher, physician, physicist and scientist. He was also the teacher of the famous chemist, Jabir ibn Hayyan (Geber), and of Abu Hanifa, the founder of the Sunni Madh'hab


AH 1315 (1898 AD): The female magazine 'Anees Al-Jalees' is issued in Alexandria, Egypt. Alexandra Mitadi headed the wide-reaching magazine, which only lasted 10 years


AH 1425 (2004 AD): Cleric Abbas Al-Sisi dies. Al-sisi was one of the prominent advocators of Islam, and a pupil of Hassan Al-Bana, founder of the Muslim Brotherhood Movement

AH 559 (1144 AD): The Mamluk general Nur ad-Din Zangi defeats the Crusaders and captures their leader after retaking the Harem city of Syria


AH 1332 (1914 AD): Germany declares war on Russia. The war caused major poverty and the spread of unemployment, which led to the communist uprising of October in which the Bolshevik seized control of Russia


AH 1426 (2005 AD): The Syrian Minister of Interior Ghazi Kanaan commits suicide in his office three weeks after he was interrogated by the UN team commissioned to investigate the assassination of late Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Al-Hariri. An hour prior to his suicide, Kanaan said to a Lebanese channel that his statements could be his last

AD 1973: Egypt and Syria claimed victory over Israel in October war (also called Ramadan War); it was Israel's first decisive 'embarrassment' ever since it was established in 1948. The second 'embarrassment' occurred in their war against Hezbollah in 2006


AH 8 (630 AD): Prophet Mohammed-peace be upon him- and his companions conquers Mecca; this incident was named Grand Conquest in Quran because many people embraced Islam, including Abu Sufyan. It also marked bringing down the idols around Kabbah


AH 961 (1554 AD): A great naval war in the Strait of Hormuz between the Ottoman and Portuguese fleets break out for 18 none-stop hours, but ended in a stalemate

AH 597(1200 AD): Abu Faraj Al-Jozi dies. He was an esteemed cleric of Arabic and Islamic jurisprudence


AH 1425 (2004 AD): 87 Thai Muslims die at the hands of the security forces, as a result of a demonstration the former organized in the Muslim-majority province of Narathiwat, calling the release of captive Muslims





13th of Ramadan





AH 1332 (1914 AD): First World War breaks out. 30 countries fought in this war and it continued f04211or four years and a half. States parted into two fighting camps: Germany leading Austria, Hungary and the Ottoman Empire, against England leading France and America. The war claimed 10 million casualties, with 21 millions injured


AH 597 (1200 AD): Mohammed Ali Pasha dies. Pasha, who established modern Egypt, is considered one of the prominent icons in the modern history of Egypt and Arabia. Pasha focused on education, industry, army, navy and agriculture in hope of establishing a grand Egypt empire. However, the Europeans deemed Pasha 'too dangerous' to their occupational interests in Arabia, and halted his expansionist dreams


AH 1425 (2004 AD): Palestinian leader Yassir Arafat dies. His health suddenly deteriorated and he was flown to France, but they were unable to determine the cause of his downfall. As a result, a conspiracy theory of Arafat been poisoned started to spread

AH 570 (1176 AD): Saladin captures many cities in Bilad al-Sham, including Baalbek from the hands of the Crusaders


AH 1195 (1781 AD): England acknowledges the independence of United States of American after George Washington's onslaught of wars. A meeting for the declaration of independence was first held in 1776, but England didn't accept it then


AH 1377 (1958 AD): The Arab League convenes on Sudan's request to discuss the disagreement between Iraq and Egypt. The six states that appeared-Egypt, Sudan, KSA, Morocco, Lebanon and Yemen-agreed that the government of Iraq is a threat

AH 3 (625 AD): Al Hassan ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib is born


AH 1224 (1809 AD): The Ottoman Empire defeats Russia in the battle of Tatarejah, claiming 10,000 Russians soldiers


AD 1994: Zionist Baruch Goldstein, member of the extremist Kash movement opens fire on Muslim worshippers in the Abrahamic mosque, killing 29 and wounding 125. A number of Jewish settlers aided Goldstein in the attack, which also led him to his death. During the massacre, Israeli soldiers closed the doors of the mosque to prevent Muslims from escaping, and prevented outsiders from entering the mosque to aid their brothers

AH 1390 (1961 AD): Al-Hassan II becomes King of Morocco after the death of his father, Mohammed VI

AH 2 (624 AD): Battle of Bader is won by Muslims, named Yom Al-Furqan in the holy Quran. The first battle in Islamic history was won by Muslims despite the number of their army being one third of their adversaries


AH 1212 (1798 AD): The French government signals the military campaign against Egypt, led by Napoleon Bonaparte


AH 1360 (1941 AD): French philosopher Henry Preston died. Preston worked as a professor in the College De France and received Nobel Prize in literature in 1927. Some of his books were translated into Arabic

AH 18 (624 AD): The great Muslim general Khalid ibn Al-Waleed (The Sword of Allah) died. Al-Waleed is one of the greatest military generals of all time and has proved a tough opponent to both Persian and Byzantine empires, where he managed to defeat many armies with numerically superior armaments and soldiers


AH 1256 (1840 AD): The Ottoman army enters the Syrian city of Halab after expelling the Egyptian army, powered by the London Accord in 1840 that stated the expulsion of Mohammed Ali Pasha's army from Halab and its return to the Ottoman Empire


AH 1426(2005 AD): The UN team commissioned to investigate the assassination of the late Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Al-Hariri charged Syrian ministers for being involved in the crime

AD 1431: French nationalist Jeanne d'Arc was sentenced to death at stake. One of the most prominent icons of the 100-year war between France and England, d'Arc headed a small army, courageously managed to win a battle in against the British forces, and expelled them from Orleans; she accomplished that feat when she was only 13 years old. Thus, she came to be known as La Pucelle d’Orleans (The Virgin of Orleans).


AH 1338 (1920 AD): Egyptian leader Saad Zaghlol travels to London to pursue negotiations with the British secretary of Colonies Lord Milner to specify the nature of their relations. Milner headed a committee a year earlier to investigate the reasons of the 1919 Revolt


AH 1375 (1956 AD): The Tunisian government issues a decree transforming the Zaytona Mosque into a university under the title The Zaytona University; it took off with 5 colleges

AH 1094(1683 AD): The Ottoman army faces a crushing defeat in its second siege of Vienna, 10 Ottomans were killed in the battle


AH 1351(1933 AD): The first volume of Al-Risala magazine is issued; one of the most famous literature magazine in Cairo. It was a weekly publication at the beginning, then became biweekly and continued until 1953


AH 1425(2004 AD): H.H Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahayan died at the age of 86, 33 of which he ruled the UAE. His death sent massive shockwaves of sorrow in the UAE and people mourned him for many days to come

AH 40 (661 AD): Ali ibn Abi Talib, the fourth Rashidi caliph is assassinated by Abd-al-Rahman ibn Muljam


AH 95 (714 AD): Al-Hajaj ibn Yousuf Al-Thaqafi died. One of the most famous icons of the Umayyad and Islamic history, Al-Thaqafi played a key role in the expansion of the caliphate. Al-Thaqafi was known to be rough with his opponents, and security under his reign was prevalent


AH 1275 (1859 AD): Excavation of the Suez Canal commences. The 162.5 KM long canal took 10 years of excavating by 60,000 Egyptian farmers to complete, and was opened for business in 1869

AH 273 (886 AD): Cleric Ibn-Majah was born. Ibn-Majah devoted 15 years of his life to the pursuit of education and meeting polymaths, after which he settled to record his findings. Unfortunately, most of his work was lost, and the only writing that survived was 'Sunan Ibn-Majah'; the book was highly esteemed among high level scholars of that time


AH 1375 (1956 AD): Libya makes effective the Israeli Boycott decree and establishes the boycott office, because of the huge public pressure


AH 1384 (1965 AD): England Prime Minister Winston Churchill died at the age of 90. Considered one of the best prime ministers England ever had, Churchill led his country to victory in the WW2, which made the Queen of England knight him. Churchill won a Nobel Prize in literature

AH 40 (661 AD): Ahmed Ibn Tolun founder of the Tuloni state was born. Ibn Tulon governed Egypt and succeeded in establishing a strong estate that stretched to Hijaz and Bilad Al-Sham. His mosque in Cairo remains a testament to the prosperity Ibn Tulon's estate reached


AH 1371 (1911 AD): The Turkish government allows the offspring of Ottoman clan to enter the country, excluding the Ottoman princes. Previously, Turkey abolished the Ottoman caliphate in 1923 and expelled the Ottoman clan that governed it for 963 years


AH 1374 (1955 AD): Signing of the Warsaw Accord that comprised the USSR and the eastern fronts, as a direct response to U.S signing the NATO Accord with its European allies

AH 658 (1269 AD): The Mamluk general Saif-Ul Din Qutoz led the Muslims in victory against the Mongols in the Battle of Ain Jaloot; it was one of the biggest and most decisive battles in the Islamic history


AH 1393 (1973 AD): Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and UAE stop exporting oil to the US and Holland, as part of the October war between Egypt/Syria and Israel


AH 1422 (2001 AD): The Tank Hunter, Mohammed Abdul 'Ati died. Abdul 'Ati made himself a reputation of hunting tanks in the October 73 war, something which was registered in various encyclopedia as the most renowned tanks hunter in the world

AH 1304 (1887 AD): Thomas Edison invents the Gramophone. Edison is an American scientist who made about a thousand inventions, such as the Electrical Pulp


AH 1408 (1988 AD): Kim Philippe died. The most famous spy of the twentieth century, Philippe was a senior official in the British Intelligence Agency and commissioned as anti-KGB. However, Russians managed to recruit him for their interest despite being nominated to head the British intelligence, thus Philippe fled to Russia where he spent the rest of his life


AH 1409 (1989 AD): The Libyan leader Mo'amer Al-Gadhafi declares that Arabs are free to enter his country without visas, right after he personally bulldozed a border point with Tunisia, and another with Egypt. However, Al-Gadhafi's declaration didn't last long as he enforced visas later on

AH 9 (631 AD): Prophet Mohammed-peace be upon him-returned from the Battle of Tabuk, which some of his companions skipped


AH 808 (1404 AD): Muslim polymath Ibn Khaldoun died


AH 1021 (1612 AD): The Ottoman Empire signed the Istanbul Treaty with Iran to conclude the war that continued for 9 years; the treaty established borders between the two countries, but the truce didn't last long as infighting recurred two years later

AH 1353 (1935 AD): Inauguration of petroleum pipeline between Al Mosel in Iraq to Haifa, which broke down years later. The American occupational forces in Iraq are reopening the pipeline to provide Israel's need of Oil


AH 1329 (1947 AD): Mohammed Ali Janah takes office as President of Pakistan after the partition from India
