How do you see the good teacher ?

Peace be upon you
That's really a good question which gonna help all teachers
I think as a futur teacher that if I want to succeed in my career I have to be as a friend not so severe and not so easy going
I have to bring always new things that will impress them and use topics that'll be interesting for them
and I don't know
hairless17
2008-05-23, 22:39
I may not agree with you
really , it is good to be friendly with pupils but not always and not with all kinds of pupils
sometimes it is very necessary to be severe
the second important thing is to bring fun to your teaching
and make your pupils love this ********
actually,i made a research about the good teacher by making a questioinaire then i gave it to the student and the results was that the good teacher iswho knows how to deel with the students and use different ways by teaching them as using the visual aid and to attrac the students by the lesson and not to get boored and the teacher have to give his students a good impression by his knowledge and his clothes.
i hape that you will make use of these information.

well I think eache teacher has his own way and style
I know that being so friendly will be bad especially with now a days students but there are some whom friendship is a way that pushes them to work better
hairless17
2008-05-26, 13:43
I agree with you
i want to tell you that we must not deal with all the pupils in the same way
[exactly the good teacher should deal with each student with a way
because not all the students are the same]
hairless17
2008-05-28, 19:26
yes you are right
i am very proud to see your good level smart
thank you hairless ..you are so kind

why do you consider your teacher as a good teacher ?

2008-05-31, 15:28
Hello,
I am a novice to this forum and to forums in general,.. In fact, my student "smart" has invited me to this intellectual banquet.. so thanks so much .. I am so happy to be here.
I came across this big word "good teacher" or what I used to call the perfect teacher but to my humble opinion, no one is at that level... from the comments I read, I recognised that people tend to evaluate the teacher on how he could retain his class calm and make his pupils obey to discipline .. but this is not the only function of the teacher. This is more often than not the job of the policeman. From my short experience as a teacher, and from the accumulations of ELT literature. And most importantly, from the remarkable research of my pupils this year entitled "the profile of the good teacher" I think the good teacher is first and foremost a leader i.e. the good teacher is the one who fosters for closer relationships with his/ her students, the one who shows the way and gives the example, pays attention to discipline, and he who has the ability to deal effectively with discipline problems (some teachers try to retain control by shouting but it is not the way and I can give you an anecdote that happened to me this year. Once the problems start to arouse I suggested that they can form what I called "لجنة عقلاء" and it worked , and almost all the problems settled down afterwards ), besides cooperation with school employees and parents. The one who is ready to share and ready to listen leaving room for his pupils to share and to voice up whatever they have in their minds. In addition, Pedagogical competence is an other important factor. The professional teacher usestopics that will arouse interest or increase the students' commitment to learn the ********.Not to forget the declarative knowledge that he has to have. The traditional role of the teacher is as a resource person: "Teachers are proficient in English, are aware of the structure of the ********, and are able to explain it to learners"(?-). Not only knowing but knowing how: firstly, by fostering a classroom climate of trust, stress-free environment and a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.. because whenever there is stress, hatred to the subject matter none of the learning or teaching is going to take place. Another primordial quality is that of the manager: and that means aprofessional user of the means, uses and knows how to use enrichment materials(is familiar with technology-based resources). A manager of time, not loosing the slightest second. Choosing and providing the type of learning in class accordingly with students preferred styles and attitudes. Another quality is being reflective: reflects on his/ her teaching and re-assesses teaching practices. Teachers have to be sensitive and are always in search for the betterment. This entails another quality: Potential learner. Good teachers care for their self-development. They engage in every opportunity of in-service training . Yet other challenges we have to consider. In this changing environment teachers will have to seek for new ways of teaching. So he is also a problem solver: Coping with a changing pupil population. He has to innovate to confront the challenges of everyday teaching. We have to use our "own intuitive ability and experimental knowledge" to decide what works and what does not work. Not to forget that he is a professional evaluator, designing tests that are valid and reliable, and practical to administer and grade. And of course, he is a moral person when evaluating. Less important credential is the image: the image, the way he dresses and the way he speaks and I hope my student will talk about that quality more because they discussed it in details in class.
But we should perhaps do more as far as English ******** teaching is concerned (objective setting, goal achievement, decision making, problem solving, conflict solving, communication, commitment, responsibility, critique, providing autonomy… etc) all of which are essential skills that teachers need to grapple with all classroom difficulties. Especially in our region where foreign ********s are not a priority to our poor pupils. In so doing, teachers could successfully contribute to the shaping of ELT and the success of the pupils. Not only that but making the experience of teaching very exciting for our pupils first and for us possibly.
To sum it all: here is a quote from The Moroccan Teachers' Magazine:
"the role of the teacher is not only as that of an English teacher, but also as an educator, promoting and fostering the development of positive values, critical thinking and world knowledge"( M. T. association, 2002).

according to me a good teacher must be and must do the following things.........
A great teacher Interacts with the child (physically, and mentally)
A great teacher gives affection to the pupils, makes them understand what emotion is.
A great teacher smiles to his/her pupils even when they screw him up.
A great teacher teaches not only **** book materials but also The truth that's happening outside. Practice balanced with theory.
A great teacher dedicates him/herself to the job. They made a commitment. Then they have to do it.
A great teacher understands that a child is not only a tiny bundle of joy that can cry, smile, laugh. He/she must understand that in front of him stands a true miracle of life.

the good student
To become a good student, you need to get motivated! Motivation can come from seeing the situation of many poor children around the world who are not lucky enough to get a proper education. Keep that in mind when you don't want to attend class or study at home. Another reason to get motivated to study is that you will enjoy a better quality of life as an educated person. You can go to educational websites, like this, and surf them with interest. You must not force yourself to study, this will make learning a chore and you'll not feel like even opening your books. You will have many academically good students in your courses. Try becoming friends with them (or encourage your current friends to be better students), and you'll be immersed in an academic environment which will help you feel motivated!
Above all, you need confidence! For that, we need to feel that we are working for ourselves, and not for others! Good luck!

let's move to a new topic
hairless17
2008-06-27, 21:39
how can a teacher make learning english interesting
i will tell you sir
first the teacher needs to make his students love the subject and thats by showing the student that english is important in our world
second, the teacher have to use different ways in teaching like giving them riddles, tongue twisters;idioms and so on.......and that makes them feel that this subject is not booring
third, the teacher have to make his student search.....and search......and search, when the student search they can get a lot of information and feel happy and learn
finally, the teacher need to make his student speak english in the class room
waiting for your comments
hairless17
2008-06-30, 22:07
you will be a good teacher if you choose it
i love teaching and i think that it is the most wonderful and nobel job ever
however, the student of these days make it booring and hard
and if i didnt get my dream maybe i will be a teacher, and why not
salam
in my opinion:the best teacher is the one who knows how to deal with students.......neither friendlly, nor angrelly......why?
because the teacher who deals with students as his friends will face a big problem later because most of them won't show
him respect that means their relation is not of teacher-student but that of friend -friend which is ----in my point of view----
forbiden in the field of teaching
he must be50/50 when dealing with students......in other words:to play with carrots and sticks....

What about cheating in exams ? Can we discuss this subject ?1
أم بدر الدين
2008-07-15, 21:27
Cheating in examination is one of the things that threaten the society, for it urges the spread of falsehood and forms an attack against truth. It causes total chaos in the society and indicates that some people will have unjustified access to posts and honors.
- Gaining a degree or a certificate without being really qualified for that degree is a form of cheat, which is totally rejected and prohibited. This is based on the hadith that reads: “He who deceitfully shows that he has something which he really does not have is like a person who puts on garments that do not belong to him and claim that they are his.”
“It goes without saying that all kinds and forms of cheating are haram. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has made this clear in the hadith: “He who cheats us does not belong to us.” Any one who cheats really commits a sin and he who helps him in cheating also shares in the blame. It’s to be stressed that toughness of exams does not justify cheating, for examination is originally meant to distinguish the studious from the lazy; it’s to show how far one has exerted efforts in preparing for the test. It’s not logic, of course, to shower both the diligent and the indolent with accolade of merits. This is injustice. A sound mind never accepts such an unjust equation.
It becomes evident that cheating in exams is strictly prohibited in Islam. It’s the duty of the Muslim students to steer clear of all forms of cheat, deceit, and dishonesty. By doing so, Allah, Most High, will grant them high degrees, both in this world and the world to come.
May Allah guide us all to the straight path! 0
Almighty Allah knows best.
hairless17
2008-07-15, 23:48
You are right
It is our duty as muslims to fight cheating
But why did it become normal to cheat ? It has even become a right ?1
أم بدر الدين
2008-07-16, 19:50
It has become a right for stupid people
Do you know why??? 0
Cause they are too lazy and have things or dreams to realise by cheating '
hairless17
2008-07-16, 20:21
I think that the cheating has become organized
Yes.........cheating has become a very big problem today because all the students are counting on cheating to succeed and get a job in real life
Really.......i feel sorry for them and they have new ways
Please sir can you try to stop it..........imagine some one works hard and the other plays all the time and we take the same mark!!!!!!!!!!!!i can't take it any more
They make me feel that iam working hard for nothing
hairless17
2008-07-20, 17:34
No you are not working hard for nothing
What is important is what you feel about yourself
How can you imagine the feeling of a cheater
Is he statisfied ? I don't think so
أم بدر الدين
2008-07-20, 21:16
They are not satisfied because they even don't know how to cheat they are just drawing what they see

the best way to treat bad students is by cooperation with school personel and parents.. and trying to understand their social situation..
there are many parameters and considerations to concider before rashing into punishment of taking decision

salam...
I want to add something written by Dr. Bob Kizlik I've it read recently from the net...I hope readers especially teachers get benefits from it ...Mistakes New Teachers Often Make, So Don't
New teachers often -
Have not figured out what exactly they want and don't want - a root cause of much of what follw s.
Overpraise students for doing what is expected.
Don't know the difference between praise and acknowledgement and when each is appropriate.
Fail to do effective long-range and daily planning.
Spend too much time with one student or one group and not monitoring the entire class.
Begin a new activity before gaining the students' attention.
Talk too fast, and are sometimes shrill.
Use a voice level that is always either too loud or too soft.
Stand too long in one place (the feet of clay syndrome).
Sit too long while teaching (the posterior of clay syndrome).
Overemphasize the negative.
Do not require students to raise hands and be acknowledged before responding.
Are way too serious and not much fun.
Are way too much fun and not serious.
Fall into a rut by using the same teaching strategy or combination of strategies day after day.
Ineffectively use silence (wait time) after asking a ******* question.
Are ineffective when they use facial expressions and body ********.
Tend to talk to and interact with only half the class (usually their favorites, and usually on the right)..
Collect and return student papers before assigning students something to do.
Interrupt students while they are on task.
Use "SHHHH" as a means of quieting students (one of the most annoying and ineffective behaviors).
Overuse verbal efforts to stop inappropriate student behavior - talk alone accomplishes little.
Settle for less rather than demand more.
Use threats to control the class (short term, produces results; long term, backfires).
Use global praise inappropriately.
Use color meaninglessly, even to the point of distraction (I know you've seen this happen).
Verbally reprimand students across the classroom (get close and personal if possible).
Interact with only a "chosen few" students rather than spreading interactions around to all students.
Do not intervene quickly enough during inappropriate student behavior.
Do not learn and use student names in an effective way (kids pick up quickly on this and respond in kind).
Read student papers only for correct answers and not for process and student thinking.
Ask global questions that nobody likely will answer.
Fail to do appropriate comprehension checks to see if students understand the ******* as it is taught.
Use poorly worded, ambiguous questions.
Try to talk over student noise (never, ever, do this, because when you do, you lose and they win).
Are consistently inconsistent.
Will do anything to be liked by students.
Permit students to be inattentive to an educationally useful media presentation (this happens a lot).
Introduce too many topics simultaneously (usually the result of poor planning).
Sound egocentric (if you have to get your jollies from your students, there might be a problem).
Take too much time to give verbal directions for an activity (an inability to focus and explain effectively).
Take too much time for an activity (usually the result of poor planning).
Are nervous, uptight, and anxious (if this is persistent, you need help).
.Overuse punishment for classroom misbehavior - going to an extreme when other consequences work better.
cood luck for every one.......

as a student ..........i think that the best teacher is the one who can give the real english........i mean the one who can speak english verry good with his students ........like a native speaker ............not like the way that the majority of the teachers in algeria speak because the most important in any ******** is how to tchat with others.......not just rules and lessons
Welcome Abdou
Feel at home
A very right point of view but I do not agree with you
like a native speaker
What is important is to give correct pronunciation even if it is not like native speakers
I like my teacher to be like a native speaker.........but it is not possible always
The important thing is that the teacher shouldn't speak arabic at all in the class

How must a teacher deal with students in the first contact ?0
if i may say
i think there is no good or bad teacher
no one thaught him how to be good or bad
he is as he thinks he is if he thinks he is good so be it for him
a good teacher needs to have a large amount of experience
he need to see his work from an outer point of view
as if he is watching himself in a movie which happens in a classroom around children
then, he can evaluate his work and correct his mistakes
this stays a point of view
it can be discussed

i'm not sure but i think i've participated before........this doesn't prevent me to add my point view twice:so i see that a good teacher must be a good person first.........i mean morally.......he has to deal with all the personalities of his students........he had to be patient and skillful and he should have a good background .....i mean a great knowledge of pedagogy and psychology of the student behaviours......in my own point of view........
good dealing my friend......it's so long!!!!!! we've not discussed.....

Hello; miss smart .your english is so very good since you are astudent really i am satisfied to see such interrested student in english
thanks my dear noor
that is so sweet of you
i want to talk about the best way to communicate with students so to stay away from problems
A good teacher is the one who does his/her work.......just to fullfill one's duty not more not less .
I don't know i have seen a lot of teachers who got in so many problems coz they tried to work with certain students coz they are interested
Teaching is the most difficult job ever
One day this year my English teacher let me do a full lessons about indirect speech he knows that i can do it but it was so difficult
Dear freinds
The good teacher in lge teaching is the one who finds all the aids.I don't mean the visual or real situations but
the help. Please don't blame teachers"good or not good"In my opinion the whole responsiblity is upon the shoulders of the ministery of education. The imam chafii said"you want to be safe at a time you didn't go through the right way ie- the safe one - and you know that boats can't sail on sand"
As I previously stated ...........teachers differ as anything in this wide world..... what really matters is the outcome of this teacher's work....... A good one is who makes efforts and reaches acceptable resullts..... There is no phylosophy in here....you work hard you collect fruit of your sweat.....no sweet without sweat ....anything you take care of ,,,,,,,it gets better and flourishes..... even coping with people.......Just fulfill your duty.
I mean to hurt noone but to point out that it's experience that speaks.
Many teachers put the blame on the system, the administration,, the parents and they
simply forget all about themselves... I'm one of them...............All in all it's just a brick in the wall.............
