indefinite articles

a:used in front of a word beginning with a consonant with u or eu
when (y) sound is produced

a friend - a boy - a girl - a car - a house - a man - a table
a university - a useful thing - a European
I'd like a cup of coffee, please
i've never eaten such a good meal
She is a scientist



an: used in front of a word beginning with a vowel (a,e,i,o,u) or a word beginning with a mute h

an orange- an elephant - an umbrulla- an egg- an idiot - an hour - an honest man-
i've been waiting for an hour


definite article


the: used before both singular and plural nouns, when it's clearly understood who or what is meant

the boy-the boys-the girl-the girls-the moon-the people
the sky is bleu and the sun is shining
can you tell me the time please?
the ace cream i bought yesterday is not good


Main uses of a and an

a)before singular,countable nouns representing no particular person or thing

i have got a new car
there has been an accident
a cat could catch a mouse

b)before singular,countable nouns representing a class of things

an elephant never forgets
a cheese plant doesn't need much water
a palm tree is usually very tall

c)before nouns complements including names of professions

he is a teacher but his wife is a Doctor and their son is an intelligent boy

d)before expressions of frequency ,price,speed,ratio

i got shopping once a week
these shoes cost 100 DA a pair
he runs about 80 KM an hour

e)before some numbers and expressins of quality
a hundred
a thousand
a little
a lot of
a couple
a dozen
a few

f)before exclamations involving singular countable noun, usually after (what,how,rather,such,so,half,too
