Par extrapolation on définit comme alimentation tout système secondaire, qui assure l’apport d’éléments de base et d’énergie (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89nergie) à un système principal dépendant du premier pour son fonctionnement. Dans le domaine technique on parle ainsi par exemple d'alimentation électrique (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alimentation_%C3%A9lectrique) ou d'alimentation en carburant (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carburant) d'un moteur (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moteur) thermique. Cette acception ne sera pas développée dans cet article consacré à la fonction alimentaire dans le domaine du vivant.
