Gossip: casual or unconstrained conversation or reports about other people, typically involving details that are not confirmed as being true.
From the definition we know that gossiping is a bad behavior, and it causes problems and maybe false impression about others.
Gossiping is done by people who have a lot of free time and empty minds, these people enjoy doing it or at least listening to it, but they hate when they are the victim of it.
Coming from the fact that anyone can be the victim of gossiping, you and me (as individual) must deny it and do not get involved in it, and fill our free time with useful hobbies.

That's true the vast majority of us gossip because they have nothing useful to do so the solution(which is not reallly a solution) is to talk negatively about people behind their backs though as you 've sad they feel bad and embarassed if the talk was about them
Another reason is when some people feel less important or worthy than other peers ,they start tearing them down to feel better about themselves

we still have many other reasons
