When the teacher provides you with the handouts,try to pick up BIG TITLES and look for them on the internet.Then,read what you found and summarize using your own words.

Be self-educated i.e do not rely on what university gives you try to educate your self and for the lessons what the teachers give you is an outline (civilisation, literature for instance) and you are going to expand your knowledge on them or take only what the teachers provide.
Important thing: try to understand don't memorize things only.
