what is romanticism ? what are its caracteristic?

Romanticism is a term that is associated with imagination and boundlessness and in critical usage is contrasted with Classicism,which is commonly associated with reason,sensibility and restriction.A romantic attitude may be detected in the literature of any period,but as a historical movement it arose in the 18th and 19th centuries in reaction to more rational literary,philosophical,artistic,religious and economic standards.The most profound and comprehensive ideal of romanticism is the vision of greater personal freedom for the individual.

The characteristics
-Values feeling and intuition over reason.
-Focuses on the importance of the individual.
-Favors individual freedom.
-Sees poetry as the highest expression of imagination.
-Romantic literature emphasizes the dream or inner world of the individual.
-Romantic writers emphasized childhood's impressionability,its freshness of vision compared to the perspectives of adults-that is,childhood innocence.
-Nature as a source of visionary experience:the romantics,taking their lead from Rousseau,connected nature with visionary experience in which one is pulled beyond the self into a transcendental state of mystical union with life.
-Mythology:under the Augustans,mythology in literature had degenerated to series of clichés.The Romantics re-discovered the psychological and sociological bases of myth and were thus able to resurrect mythological literature in all its ancient energy.
