salam alaykom ;

i'll try to give you some notes dear sister ...so ,

1- simple sentence : contains a subject and a verb, called an independent clause , it expresses a complete thought....i mean it has a complele meaning. eg : they understand the lesson .

2 - compound sentence : contains two independent clauses joined by a coordinator .
the coordinators are : for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so....( in order not to forget them , try to take the first letter of each coordinator to have this word " fanboys " ) eg : she doesn't like dogs , but she loves cats.
note : coordinators are always preceded by a comma.

3 - complex sentence : has an independent clause joined by one or more dependent clauses . it( i mean complex sentence ) has a subordinator such as because, since, after, although, or when or a relative pronoun such as that, who, or which. eg : After they finished studying, they went to the movies .they went to the movies after they finished studying .
note : when the sentence begins with the dependent clause , it is followed by coma . when it begins whith the independent clause , so it contains no comma.

to sum up :

SIMPLE SENTENCE = 1 independent clause

I went to the grocery store.

COMPOUND SENTENCE = 2 independent clauses

I went to the grocery store, but I realized that I forgot my wallet.
(Remove "but" and you have 2 sentences)

COMPLEX SENTENCE = 1 independent clause, 1 dependent clause

I went to the grocery store in order to buy milk for the next week.

i hope you understand my message..

Compound sentences:

A compound sentence consists of two or more independent clauses. The independent clauses can be joined in one of two ways:
• With a coordinating conjunction: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so (preceded by a comma)
• ; With a semicolon
Examples:
The boat overturned, but nobody was injured.
Clouds covered the sky, and raindrops began to fall.
I warned you, but you did not listen.

Complex sentences :

A complex sentence contains one independent clause and at least one dependent clause.
These sentences use subordinating conjunctions to link ideas. As you check out these examples, see if you can find the subordinating conjunctions.

Peace be upon you

Clause:is a group of words containing a subject and predicate and forming part of a sentence. The 2 kinds of clauses are the independent clause(also called the main clause)and the dependent clause(subordinate clause)

eg:I saw him when I came in

here the main clause or the independent clause is I saw him
what you have to bear in mind that the independent clause expresses a complete idea and it can stand alone as a sentence

Types of sentences:

the simple sentences:contain one idea
eg:Ice melts

the compound sentence:contains 2 independent clauses joined by coordinating conjuctions:and,but,or,either....or,neither......n or etc
eg:she did not attend her lessons ,but copied all of them

the complex sentence:includes 1 independent clasue and 1 subordinate clause
eg:he repeated his behavior although I warmed him

the complex compound sentence:is a combination of a compound sentence and a complex one
eg:while I go to the party,Jack refuses,but Sam hesitated.
