The Third Lesson in Phonetics

The lesson is about vowel sounds

The vowel sounds result from the pronunciation of the vowels ( a,e,i,o,u ) and the semi-vowel y



The vowel sounds are divided into 3 categories

The vowels or we can call them monophthongs: They are 12



1- / ʌ /

We find this sound in the vowel u .For example the word but is pronounced like this /bʌt/ and this is the phonetical transcription of but

We can find it also in the vowel o like the word come.Note that the vowel e in the end is not pronounced.So,it is not put in the phonetical transcription /kʌm/only the pronounced letters are put

/We find it also in double o like in the word blood /blʌd

/It's found in ou like in the word double pronounced like this /dʌbl

The Negative Form

Verb to be
Am / is / are ( We add not) and let evrything as it is

Other verbs

I / you / we / they / plural..............do not + verb
He / she / it / singular ...............does not + verb

In this lesson,we are going to learn the English sounds

As we know,the English alphabet consists of 26 letters :

20 consonants : b,c,d,f,g,h,j,k,l,m,n,p,q,r,s,t,v,w,x,z

5 vowels : a,e,i,o,u

One semi-vowel : y

These letters give us sounds called ******** sounds which are studied by a science called phonetics

We can divide the English sounds into two categories: Consonant Sounds and vowel sounds

We put the sound between two slashes / / to differnciate it frm the letter

Let's start by the consonant sounds

b gives us the sound /b/

c gives us two sounds : /s/ and /k/ . For example in the word car the letter c is pronounced /k/ but in the word bicycle ,the first c is pronounced /s/

d gives /d/

f gives /f/

g gives three sounds /g/ like in the world go , /ʒ/ like in the world garage and /dʒ/ like in the word manage

h gives /h/like in hot

j gives /dʒ/ like job

k gives /k/

L gives /l/

m gives /m/

n gives /n/

p gives /p/

q gives /k/

r gives /r/

s gives two sounds : /s/ like see and /z/ like revise

t gives /t/

v gives /v/

w gives /w/ like in what

z gives /z/

u and y give the sound / j / like in yes and united

There are sounds that can result from the combination of two letters

sh give / ʃ/ like in she

ch give / tʃ / as in chair

th give / ð/ as in that

Well,concerning the semi-vowel y ,it is called so because it is not really a vowel and it is not really a

consonant.So, we can use it as a vowel and we can use it as consonant.For example,in the word

yes,the letter y is a consonant but in the word agency,the letter y is a vowel.

Expressing ability : We can express a present , a past and a future ability
1- Present ability : We express a present ability using the modal « can »
Examples :
- I can do this exercise ;it is very easy. – My father can drink a very hot coffee.
2- Past ability : We can express a past ability using the modal « could »
Examples :
- Last night,I could do ten exercises. – He could arrive in time because he had a car.
3- Future ability : We can express a future ability using the expression « will be able to »
Examples :
- I can’t meet you today,but tomorrow,I will be able to meet you.
- I think my teacher will be able to give us the marks next time.

The negative form of each :
Can..............can’t could.........couldn’t will be able to.............won’t be able to

We use the future simple to talk about things that will happen in the coming time.

The words that indicate the future simple :
Tomorrow / next week /next month /next year /tonight /soon

How to conjugate a verb in the future simple: will + verb ( stem form ) ‘ll + verb ( stem form )

- I will visit you tomorrow. She’ll arrive tonight. The pupils will have an exam soon.
