He was an average student in his early years . He earned his Bachelor of Arts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bachelor_of_Arts) degree (1840) and Bachelor of Science (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bachelor_of_Science) degree (1842) at the École Normale Supérieure (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89cole_Normale_Sup%C3%A9rieure).after that professor of chemistry.
