How to write a letter

(Personal)

We’re living in a modern age where technology is the master in relationships whether it’s personal, administrative or diplomatic, but still there is a need to the old ways; I mean the way people used to contact each other since a long time ago which is the letter. Writing a letter depends on rules especially when they’re official for instance, when you write a letter of complaint, a letter to a company applying for job you need to follow some instructions to make your letter acceptable and official. Let’s start with the kind of letters you send to your classmates, friends…personal letter.

❶ Write your full address.
❷ The date. It can be written in different ways:

Saturday, 17th May (,) 2014

May 17th (,) 2014

17.05.14

❸ Salutation, the words used to address the person you are writing to.

Dear John

My Dear John

My dearest John

❹The main part of the letter. Here we have some useful and famous expressions that are used in introducing letters.

Thank you for your last letter…/ many thanks for…
I’m sorry I haven’t written earlier but…
I’m writing to tell you…/ wish you…/ apologize for…
I thought I would send you a few lines/drop you a line to…

❺ending a letter must be a sentence that’s combined with the main part of the letter. It usually signifies to the future (plans, waiting for a response, future visit ...)

I am looking forward to seeing you all soon…/ to hearing from you…

(Look forward to + V + ing = patiently waiting)

My regards to your parents.

We both hope you can come…/ hope these arrangements will suit you…

I hope everything is going well for you at the moment.

Thanking you in anticipation.

See you soon.

I wish you were here.

Don’t hesitate to contact me if there is anything I can do.

I’ll write again soon.
